Alexis Roberts and the United States won the gold medal in the Deaflympics, held in Caxias Do Sul, Brazil.
The American team went undefeated in six contests in winning the gold in the Games that began on May 1 and will conclude with a closing ceremony Sunday.
In the qualifying round, the United States defeated Lithuania 85-73, Kenya 99-20, and Turkey 80-50. In the medal round, the U.S. beat Brazil 87-18 in the quarterfinals, and Greece 68-61 in the semifinals.
In the gold medal game Friday night, the United States beat Italy 91-77.
A native of Newton, Miss. who just completed her freshman year at Jackson State, was born with a percentage of hearing in both ears, but her hearing faded. Roberts played in 17 games for JSU this season, averaging nearly two points and one rebound in limited action as the Lady Tigers won their third consecutive SWAC Regular Season championship and second straight SWAC Tournament title.
Roberts was an all-state high school basketball player at Mississippi School for the Deaf, scoring more than 1,000 points and tallied more than 500 rebounds.
