JSU Dives Into Conference Play at Home

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State University volleyball team is slated to open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Friday evening against Alabama State University at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m. The Tigers will return to their home court Sunday afternoon hosting Alabama A&M at 4 p.m.

Jackson State (1-10) finished second in the SWAC last season after giving Florida A&M a run at the championship tournament. JSU leads the SWAC in hitting percentage (.170) kills (456) and assists (435). The Tigers are ranked third in service aces (52) and digs (544). Alexis Williams leads the SWAC in service aces with 16.

Alabama State (3-12) opened its season at the Cactus Classic hosted by Arizona. ASU went 0-3 on the weekend against New Mexico State University, LIU Brooklyn and the University of Arizona. Alabama State continued its non-conference run at the Colorado State Invitational falling to Florida Gulf Coast University, Arkansas, North Alabama and Colorado State. ASU moved on to the ISTAP HBCU Challenge recording its first victory against South Carolina State, 3-0, to open the tournament. The Hornets tilted its last three matches of the tournament to Coppin State, Delaware State and Jacksonville State. ASU picked up two more victories at the Trojan Invitational defeating Jacksonville University 3-2 and Gardner-Webb University.

 The Tigers return to the court on Sunday afternoon as they face Alabama A&M at 4 p.m.

Alabama A&M (1-14) opened its season at the 2-22 FAU Invitational falling to Florida Atlantic, Lehigh University and Mercer. AAMU dropped four at the Skyhawk Invitational hosted by Tennessee-Martin. The Bulldogs registered their first win at the ISTAP HBCU Challenge defeating South Carolina State, 3-0. Alabama A&M is coming off of a loss at Middle Tennessee State yesterday as they aim for a meeting with the Tigers.

Tomorrow's game theme is "Shake Your Pom-pom." The first 200 fans inside of the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center will receive a JSU pom-pom. Sunday's game is a white out and fans are encouraged to wear white.
