JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State men's and women's tennis teams will host Jacksonville State tomorrow at the JSU Tennis Center. The women will begin at 11 a.m. and the men will begin at 2 p.m.
Jackson State women's tennis (0-1) opened its season at home against Stephen F. Austin a week ago. The Tigers fell 4-3 to SFA after securing the doubles' point.
Tyra-Nicole Whyte and
Robin Alston opened the day with a successful double's competition topping their opponents 6-2.
Zeina Shaaban and Isabel Benavides sealed the Tigers' doubles point with a 6-4 win over Felicia Back and Saga Koch of SFA.
Jackson State's Alston shined in singles against SFA's Ksenia Mamontova sealing the match 6-3, 6-3.
Daniela Ramos came out on top in her singles matchup against Zala Ule, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (2). The Tigers fought until the end, but came up short after the completion of the singles competition matches.
Jacksonville State women's tennis (3-1) is coming off a 7-0 win against Alcorn State on the road. The Gamecocks opened the match claiming the doubles point over the Braves as Jacksonville State to two 6-1 doubles wins. Jacksonville State opened singles play picking up another point from an Alcorn State forfeit. The Gamecocks collected five two-set victories amongst two more wins to shutout the Braves, 7-0.
Jackson State men's tennis (0-0) will kick off its season tomorrow at home after the teams' matches against Southern Miss were canceled on Sunday due to weather. The Tigers finished last season 9-9 overall and 4-1 in the SWAC. JSU's season concluded as SWAC Tournament Runner Ups when the Tigers fell to #1 Alabama State, 4-0.
Jacksonville State men's tennis (2-1) also shutout Alcorn State on the road in its last match up, 7-0. Jax State claimed the doubles point with 6-0 and 6-4 wins. Alcorn State put up a good fight, but the Gamecocks secured the match with six singles victories.
