HARAHAN, La. – Things didn't quite go as planned for the Jackson State University bowling team in their season-opening competition in the 2023 Colonial Classic over the weekend, but head coach Michael Boykins remains steadfast that this will be a season to remember for his squad.
In a field of 16 teams, hosted by the 13th-ranked Tulane University Green Wave and won by fourth-ranked North Carolina A&T State University, the JSU Tigers went 0-13, finishing the event with an average of 165 in 68 total games. Despite that result, Boykins says the best is yet to come for the Tigers.
"It was a tough, tough weekend and a rough outcome for our team," said Boykins. "But we'll get a lot better very soon."
With 100 total individual competitors, JSU landed two ladies among the event's top 25, including
Catalina Tovar (23rd) and Stephanie Vasquez (25th). Tovar had rounds of 177, 175, 206, 173 and 245 for 976 total pins and an average of 195.20, while Vasquez had rounds of 162, 216, 192, 191, and 214 for 975 total pins and an average of 195.00.
The Tigers' other bowlers were
Juliana Rincon (183-154-181-227-205 for 950 total pins and an average of 190.00, 34th)), Kerra Cain (135-143-159-121-161 for 719 total pins and an average of 143.80, 61st) and Amya Anderson (98-125-112-116-111 for 562 total pins and an average of 112.40, 71st).
Jackson State's next competition will be November 3-5 in the Sam Houston State University-hosted TRACK Kat Klash at the Emerald Bowl in Houston, Tex.
