Men’s Basketball Close Out California Swing at LMU

LOS ANGELES - The Jackson State University men's basketball team will close their West Coast tour on Tuesday night when they face off against LMU at Gersten Pavilion. 

The Tigers are coming off a tough loss at Cal Baptist, a game that saw senior Ken Evans Jr. score a career-high 27 points. Jordan O'Neal and Chase Adams each chipped in 10 points in the contest.

In that game, Coltie Young pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Jackson State offense, which grabbed 11 offensive boards and turned them into nine second-chance points.

In the last outing for LMU, they fell to Yale 83-80 in a game tied with two minutes to play, but Yale hit two big jumpers down the stretch to win.

JACKSON STATE-LMU
  • This is the first meeting between Jackson State and the Lions of Loyola Marymount. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Ken Evans Jr. scored 27 points, but the Jackson State men's basketball team fell to the Cal Baptist Lancers 80-66 on the road Friday night at the Fowler Event Center.
  • Evans' 27-point effort led the Tigers (0-3). Jordan O'Neal and Chase Adams each chipped in 10 points.
  • Coltie Young pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Jackson State offense, which grabbed 11 offensive boards and turned them into nine second-chance points.
  • Jackson State started off strong, putting together a 39-34 lead heading into halftime. Jackson State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 39 points close to the basket.
  • Cal Baptist took a 56-51 lead before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by a three-pointer by Zeke Cook, to even the score at 56-all with 10:11 to go in the game. 
  • The Tigers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Lancers outscored them 24-10 the rest of the way to hand Jackson State the 80-66 loss. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the half, as the bench accounted for nine of its 27 total points.
  • The Tigers shot well from beyond the arc, knocking down five of 11 three-point attempts.
  • Jackson State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game. Evans led the Tigers with a game-high 27 points, and the Tigers got a team-high eight rebounds from Coltie Young.
LOOK WHO'S BACK! 
  • The Tigers welcomed back all five starters from a year ago: Ken Evans, Coltie Young, Romelle Mansel, Chase Adams,  and Zeke Cook. They accounted for 1,510 of Jackson State's 2,232 total points last season. 
  • Evans led the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 ppg, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 86 assists.
  • Young was the second-leading scorer, with 10.9 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game. 
  • Mansel finished the year with 8.9 points per game, 31 blocked shots, and an average of 5.4 rebounds per game. 
  • Adams guided the team as the point guard and finished with 118 assists, 50 steals, and 8.0 points per game. 
  • Cook averaged 5.9 rebounds per game with 16 blocks and 35 steals 
BIG FROM THE BENCH
  • Coach Mo is looking for a big thing from the bench this year. He added some key players who he is expecting to give critical minutes and play well when their time is called. Some of those players include Treyon Johnson, Keiveon Hunt, and Jalani Bell
  • The Tigers have scored 58 points off the bench, with 27 coming on the road against Cal Baptist.
TIGERS TO PLAY IN HBCU CHALLENGE 
  • The Chris Paul Family Foundation and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the third annual circuit of two Historically Black College and University (HBCU) events, the HBCU Tip-Off and Challenge, presented by the AEA Foundation.
  • The  HBCU Tip-Off will take place November 18-19 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and the HBCU Challenge will be held December 16-17 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
  • Jackson State will face Howard and North Carolina A&T in Las Vegas, with both games being broadcast on ESPNU. 
TOUGH SLATE 
  • Jackson State opened the 2023-24 season by playing three games in five days, starting at Memphis and then traveling to California to face San Diego and Cal Baptist. 
  • The Tigers will face ten teams that made the NCAA tournament a year ago, including a team in Houston that made it to the Sweet 16 last year and Gonzaga, who made it to the Elite Eight. They will travel on the road as they face all ten teams except Texas Southern, whom they will play at home.
