The Jackson State baseball team will return to action Tuesday at Louisiana at 6 p.m. in Lafayette, La.
Jackson State (12-2) has won 10 straight games and 12 of 14 contests to begin 2023. The Tigers are batting .324 and averaging more than 12 runs per game during the winning streak. The Tigers have scored 10+ runs seven times during the streak, including six consecutive double-digit run games. All eight of Jackson State's home runs have come over the last 10 games, with 39 of the 111 hits going for extra bases (22 2B, 9 3B, 8 HR). The Tigers last played Wednesday, rallying for an 11-7 win over Butler as JSU won for the fifth time this season when trailing in a game.
INF Ty Hill has started 2023 as he ended 2022 - getting hits, and getting on base. After missing the opening game due to an ankle injury, Hill has had at least one hit in 12 of 13 games played in 2023 and has reached base in all 13 games he has played in. Hill is hitting .458 on the season, with 13 of his 22 hits for extra bases (8 2B, 2 3B, career-high tying 3 HR), and has walked 15 times with 20 RBI (1.490 0PS; .594 OB%, .896 SLG%.).
Dating back to last season, Hill has at least one hit in 22 of his previous 23 games and has reached base in 23 consecutive games. Hill is tied for second in the SWAC with teammate Daniel Bannon in runs scored (19), and is third in batting average and slugging percentage, second in OPS, OB%, and doubles, is tied for fifth in triples, tied for sixth in hits, tied for seventh in home runs, and tied for third in RBI.
OF Jordon Smiley has been an RBI machine for Jackson State. In his seven games as a starter, Smiley has hit .345 (10-29), with six extra bases hits (2 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR) and 22 RBI. Smiley earned SWAC Hitter of the Week honors for a torrid six-game week Feb. 28 - Mar. 5, with a pair of 5+ RBI games, driving in 19 runs. Smiley hit .333 with eight runs scored, three multi-hit games, and four multi-RBI games. His 22 RBI rank second in the SWAC this season.
Louisiana (12-5) won the Sun Belt Conference title last season and is coming off a home series win over High Point this past weekend. Â Heath Hood (.397 avg) leads the Ragin Cajuns in batting average and hits (23), is third in runs scored (14), and fourth in RBI (11).
