BIRMINGHAM, Ala.| Jackson State women's basketball head coach
Tomekia Reed and three Tigers were honored at the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Basketball Tournament awards banquet ahead of the tournament, the conference announced Tuesday evening.
Senior forward,
Angel Jackson was tabbed SWAC Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson is enjoying the most efficient season of her career as she's ranked 10
th in the nation in blocks per game and 13
th in the nation in blocks. Jackson made 27 game appearances this season starting in 22 of those matchups. She leads the Tigers and the conference in blocked shots averaging 2.4 a game. Jackson averages 9.4 points a game and 7.0 rebounds a game. She has scored a total of 253 points, 190 rebounds, and 66 blocks this season. Jackson has registered 11 double figure scoring games, seven double figure rebounding games this season and four double-doubles.
Ti'Ian Boler was tabbed All-SWAC 1
st Team. Boler has been a force for the Tigers in her third year as she's appeared in 27 games for the Tigers this season and started in 25. She leads the team in scoring with 333 points on the season. She posted a career high 25 points against Texas. She is averaging 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. Boler notched 18 double figure scoring games this season for JSU including three double-doubles against UCLA, FAMU and UAPB. Boler shot 42.7 percent from the field and 81.7 percent from the free throw line this season. She leads the SWAC in free throw percentage. Boler has a total of 333 points, 134 rebounds, 24 assists and 17 steals on the season.
Jariyah Covington was tabbed All-SWAC 2
nd Team. In her third year with the JSU women's basketball team, Covington has played in 27 games for the Tigers and made 17 starts. Covington shot 81.3 percent from the free throw line, 43.7 percent from the three-point line and 40 percent from the field. She averages 10.7 points a game and 3.3 rebounds a game. Covington recorded 13 double figure scoring games this season, including her game high 25-point performance against Prairie View A&M. Covington registered a total of 289 points, 88 rebounds, 83 assists and 17 steals this season. She is 3
rd in the conference in free throw percentage and 4
th in assists.
JSU head women's basketball coach
Tomekia Reed was named 2023 SWAC Coach of the Year. In her fifth year as head coach at Jackson State, Reed led her program to its fourth consecutive SWAC Regular Season Championship for the first time in 23 years. As head coach of the Tigers, she has never had a losing record. Reed opened the season going 2-1 in the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament where she got her first power five win over Texas Tech, 69-63, at United Supermarkets Arena. The Tigers are currently ranked in the top 100 sitting at #97. Under Reed,
Angel Jackson has been ranked in the top 10 in blocks (#9) and 12
th in blocks. Jackson is now ranked 13
th and 10
th in those categories. Reed leads the #1 defense and offense in the SWAC this season. Her team leads the SWAC in most major categories, including blocked shots, combined team defensive and offensive rebounds, and team field goal percentage.
The Tigers are set to take on #8 Grambling State in a quarterfinals matchup to open play at the 2023 SWAC Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
