Tigers Head To Birmingham For SWAC Football Media Day; Watch Live On ESPN+

7/24/2023 12:00:00 PM

Jackson State head football coach T.C. Taylor will lead the contingent representing the two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference Champion Tigers in Birmingham for the annual SWAC Football Media Day Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel downtown.

Taylor, RB J.D. Martin, and DL Devonta Davis will address the media at the event featuring all 12 conference teams. The showcase will be video streamed live on ESPN+, with the Tigers' trio scheduled to go on at 11:44 a.m.

Jackson State football has been the SWAC's most dominant program over the past two seasons. The Tigers have gone unbeaten in conference play since Fall 2021 with back-to-back 8-0 campaigns, and have won 19 consecutive games against SWAC teams. In those games, JSU has outscored opponents 697 - 235 (36.7 ppg - 12.4 ppg), with 16 contests won by double-digits. Jackson State is 23-3 over the last two seasons with back-to-back Celebration Bowl Appearances.

Taylor takes the reigns of his alma mater after spending the previous four seasons as tight ends and receivers coach. The current single-season receptions leader in Tiger football history, Taylor has spent nearly 20 years in coaching at Coahoma Community College, Texas Southern, and North Carolina Central before coming to JSU in 2019.

Both Martin (6-1, 195; Jr., Wetumpka, Ala.) and Davis (6-3, 305; Jr., Union Springs, Ala.) are poised to take on larger roles for the Tigers this season. Martin (36 car., 173 yds, 1 TD) averaged nearly 5.0 yards per carry while also catching 14 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. Davis is the second-leading returning tackler with 21 stops, 2.0 sacks, 4.0 tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, and one forced fumble.
