JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.| The Jackson State women's basketball team rallied from a 34-32 deficit after the third quarter to beat the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 55-48, thanks to a solid defensive showing on the road Saturday. This marks head coach Margaret Richards' first win at JSU.
The Tigers had two players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 14 points and two steals. Jaileyah Cotton added 10 points and six rebounds and Diaka Berete added nine points.
The Jackson State defense held East Tennessee State shooters to just 28.1 percent from the field, including 19 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (1-1) kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 9-8.
- The Tigers and Buccaneers then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 16-15 in favor of East Tennessee State.
- East Tennessee State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 30-27 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Berete, to grab a 32-30 lead with 57 seconds to go in the third.
- ETSU responded to seize a 34-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.
- JSU knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
- Jackson State managed to gain control and had a 41-37 lead before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Cotton's three, to grow the lead to 49-37 with 1:46 to go in the contest.
- The Buccaneers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 55-48 win.
- The Tigers took advantage of four East Tennessee State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
