Tigers Edged at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 21-point showing from the bench, but fell 76-65 to the Arkansas State Red Wolves on the road Saturday on the road.

The Tigers (1-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 18 points. Shalance Montoya added 14 points and nine rebounds and Leianya Massenat helped out with 13 points and four assists off of the bench.

Jackson State out-rebounded Arkansas State 42-39 in Saturday's game, paced by Montoya's nine boards. The Tigers also collected 17 offensive rebounds and scored 15 second chance points.

JSU's defense held Arkansas State to only 39.7 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • JSU then cut the Red Wolves lead to 27-19 before going on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 27-24. 
  • Arkansas State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Tigers trailing 39-27 heading into halftime.
  • The Tigers deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 59-44 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. 
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 17 points in the paint.
  • Arkansas State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-58 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Dilworth's layup, to shrink the deficit to 74-63 with 1:05 to go in the contest. 
  • The Tigers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 76-65. Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.

  • The Tigers held the Red Wolves to only 39.7 percent shooting from the field.
  • JSU shared the ball well, recording an assist on 61 percent of made field goals.
  • The Jackson State bench came alive by adding 21 points to its scoring output.
