BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Jackson State track and field team recorded several top-five finishes on both sides on Saturday at the Samford Open. Senior
Ledamian Rowell led the way for the Tigers as the only first place winner on the day for the Tigers.
Rowell had a phenomenal showing in his first triple jump competition of the year, posting a distance of 15.45 meters.
The jumpers added two top-five finishes themselves with juniors
Mylani Galbreath and
Mya Grimes shining in the long jump and triple jump events. Galbreath posted a distance of 5.92 meters which resulted in a close second place finish. Grimes, a St. Louis native, leaped for a distance of 11.26 meters to grab the fifth place spot.Â
The throwers had an impressive showing highlighted by senior
Lilliann "Tre" Dudley and junior
Dalon Harris. Dudley posted a second-place finish in shot put after recording a throw of 13.58 meters. Dudley also placed fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.27 meters. Harris posted his own top-five finish in shot put with a throw of 15.29 meters.Â
Atlanta native,
Jace Coleman posted a third place finish in the 60 meter dash with a 6.77 time. For the women,
Callie Calicut posted a time of 8.84 in the 60 meter hurdles, good for a fourth place finish.Â
The 4x400 teams on both sides cracked the top-five with the women's team placing second with a time of 3:57.17, while the men posted a 3:20.30 time for a fifth place finish.Â
The upperclassmen duo of
Fabian Campbell and
Caleb Crutcher represented the Tigers in the top-five of the 800 meter race, running times of 1:55.84 and 1:56.07 respectively.
Amara Hawkins-Quinones built on her strong cross country season by claiming the fifth place spot in the 800 meter, posting a time of 2:19.36.

The Tigers return to Birmingham next month at the UAB Vulcan Invitational on Friday, February 7.Â
