Game 8 Preview: Jackson State and Kennesaw State set for Tuesday night

KENNESAW, Ga. | Jackson State hits the road, heading to the state of Georgia to face Kennesaw State fresh off its first win of the season last week on the road. The game tips at 7 p.m. [ET] at the KSU Convocation Center on Tuesday night.

The game will air on ESPN+.

Jayme Mitchell Jr. leads three players in double figures at 14.3 points per game and is also averaging 3.7 rebounds per game through the first seven games of the season. Meanwhile, Daeshun Ruffin is averaging 13.3 points and 3.0 assists per game through six games, while Dorian McMillian is averaging 12.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. The trio has combined to score in double figures 14 times with Mitchell and Ruffin each scoring in double figures five times, and McMillian four times.

Simeon Cottle leads four players in double figures for Kennesaw State [5-2] at 20.4 points per game and has also dished out 21 assists in seven games.

The meeting between the two will be the first between the two schools.

Game Notes

  • Today's trip marks the first of two trips to Atlanta in the  month of December for the men's basketball program, returning mid-December to take on Norfolk State and Hampton.
  • The game will feature a pair of head coaches who starred in the backcourt at the University of Alabama and were teammates for two years, with Mo Williams leading Alabama to the NCAA Tournament twice [2001-02, 2002-03]. Meanwhile, Antoine Pettway led Alabama to the Elite Eight in 2003-04.
  • Daeshun Ruffin was named the SWAC Impact Player of the Week for the first week of the season after he averaged 17.0 points per game in the two games of the season against No. 14/17 Illinois and No. 10/11 Louisville on the road. 
  • Delyle Williams got his first start of the year with Ruffin missing the Winthrop game [11.23]. 
  • The Tigers return a pair of starters from last season in Ruffin and Dorian McMillian, with McMillian earning Freshman of the Year honors last season. He returns as a Preseason Second-Team selection, while Ruffin returns as the top scorer in the conference and was named Preseason Player of the Year.
  • Head coach Mo Williams will have two sons on the bench [at least at some point this season] with his son KyDarrius serving as a an assistant coach, while another of his sons - Mike - comes in as a highly-touted recruit from Germantown High School.
  • Jayme Mitchell Jr. missed his career high in points by just two when he scored 24 points against Auburn on Wednesday, while Ebo Wilson equaled his career-high with eight rebounds.
  • The home game against Winthrop was the first non-conference home game in six years.
  • Jackson State held Louisiana to 45 points, the lowest point total an opponent has scored since Mississippi Valley State [Feb. 8] was held to 44 in Jackson State win.
  • Following tonight's game, Jackson State will be off for eight days before facing Houston [Dec. 10] on the road.
