BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Jackson State finished second on the men's side at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday night while the women finished ninth overall.
The men finished with 93 points just behind Texas Southern with 100 points, and finished ahead of UAPB (89) and Alabama State (88.50). Jackson State claimed four individual SWAC championships, including a pair by Andrew Kiplagat. He rose to the top of the medal stand with first place finishes in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:32.17 and in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:19.84. He was joined as a SWAC champion on the men's side by Ledamian Rowell in the long jump with a distance of 7.49 meters (24-07.00).
On the women's side, Lilliann Dudley claimed gold in the shot put with a throw of 15.03 meters (49-03.75), winning the event by 1.14 meters.
Several student-athletes reached the medal stand or scored points for the Tigers throughout the weekend including a pair of sprinters. Jace Coleman finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.85 seconds as he finished behind Chaunzavia Lewis (Texas Southern/6.84 seconds) and Derrick Williams (Alcorn State/6.85 seconds). He was joined by Ronald Huddleston in the 60-meter dash in sixth place in a time of 6.90 seconds. Three middle distance runners scored points for the Tigers in the 800-meters including Dominic Turner in third with a time of 1:52.93, finishing just behind Genesis Joseph (UAPB/1:52.05). He was joined by Fabian Campbell in sixth (1:54.99) and Caleb Crutcher in eighth (1:57.20).
Godfrey Kimutai finished in the top five in three different races including fifth in the 1-mile run (4:25.43). He also finished second in the 3000-meters (8:33.01) and third in the 3000-meters (15:25.36). The Tigers' Distance Medley team finished fourth in a time of 10:28.62.
In field events, Javon Gray finished in the top eight in a pair of events including eighth in the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters (22-11.75) and seventh in the triple jump at 14.98 meters (49-01.75). Rowell finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 15.56 meters (51-00.75) after his win the long jump.Â
Dalon Harris finished fourth in the shot put at 16.03 meters (52-07.25), and he was joined by teammate Elijah Blige eighth in the same event with a throw of 14.35 meters (47-01.00). Meanwhile, Robert Salhab III finished third in the weight throw with a distance of 17.77 meters (58-03.75).
On the women's side, Jackson finished seventh in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:50.79 and eighth in the Distance Medley with a time of 14:48.93.
Madyson McGill finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 2.91 meters (9-06.50), while Mylani Galbreath finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.79 meters (19-00.00). After her championship performance earlier Dudley finished fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.49 meters (54-01.25). She was joined by Gabrielle Holliday in eighth at 16.19 meters (53-01.50).
