JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at 55-45 with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter to beat the Texas Southern Tigers 63-60 at home Saturday
The Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by Leianya Massenat, who had 20 points and eight rebounds. Taleah Dilworth added 13 points and Zoe Cooper chipped in as well with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Jackson State grabbed 37 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Texas Southern's 35, led by Cooper's 11 boards.
The JSU defense held Texas Southern shooters to just 25 percent from the field, including 19 percent from three-point range. The JSU Tigers also kept Courtlyn Loudermill to 4-of-20 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (14-13, 12-4SWAC) kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 14-10.
- Texas Southern kept adding to that lead, building a 21-16 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Diaka Berete, to tie the game at 21.
- Texas Southern then took control, putting the Tigers at a 29-25 disadvantage heading into halftime.
- TSU continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 37-25 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jaileyah Cotton, to trim its deficit to 37-31 with 4:02 to go in the third.
- Texas Southern countered and stretched its lead to 46-37 heading into the fourth. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
- TSU kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 55-45 advantage before Jackson State went on an 11-0 run, finished off by Cooper's layup, to seize a 56-55 lead with 2:04 to go in the contest.
- The JSU Tigers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 63-60 win.
- Jackson State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring six fast break points.
