BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Shannon Grant and Daeshun Ruffin were named weekly award winners by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) office on Tuesday afternoon for their performances last week.
Grant was named the SWAC Impact Player of the Week after helping lead Jackson State to a pair of wins to close out the home portion of the schedule. The graduate student averaged 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the two games this week, and also averaged 1.5 blocks per game. He finished the week shooting 59.1 (13-of-22) percent from the floor and 87.5 (7-of-8) percent from the free throw line. Grant scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Texas Southern, and followed that up with 17 points and eight rebounds against Prairie View A&M. The award is the second for Grant in as many weeks.
Meanwhile, Ruffin was named the co-Newcomer of the Week after averaging 14.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game in a pair of wins this week for Jackson State. The junior guard finished the week shooting 40.7 (11-of-27) percent from the floor and 37.5 (3-of-8) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 100.0 (5-of-5) percent from the free throw line. Ruffin scored 13 points and dished out four assists in a win over Texas Southern to start the week, before scoring 17 points and dishing out six assists against Prairie View A&M.
