JACKSON, Miss. | The Jackson State women's tennis team claimed a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season championship with a 4-1 win over the Alcorn State Braves on Friday afternoon.
With this win, the Tigers (11-9, 8-1 SWAC) claim their third title in four years and second consecutive. They will also be the no. 1 seed heading into the SWAC Tournament based on head-to-head records.
They began the day clinching the doubles point with a 2-0 win thanks to
Kayleigh Didderiens,
Isabella Benavides,
Zofia Dziewiecka, and
Daniella Tovar. The team of Didderiens and Benavides took the win on court two with a 6-1 victory over their opponents, while Dziewiecka and Tovar won 6-1 at number three to give the Tigers the lead heading into singles play.
Senior
Chiara Desia made quick work of her match at number six in a 6-0, 6-0 decision, finishing the season undefeated against conference opponents. Freshman
Kayleigh Didderiens also claimed a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory at number three.
Paula Corbalan pushed the Tigers to victory with the final win of the day as she defeated her opponent in a 6-2, 6-2 decision on court one.
