JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State used a five-run third inning en route to a 13-8 non-conference victory over Alcorn State on Friday night at Braddy Field.
Jackson State (6-4), winners of three consecutive games and five of its last six, led by a run before a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-run double from Payton Boines to build a 6-0 lead. After Alcorn State chipped away at the lead to get to within 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers answered with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-3 lead highlighted by three stolen bases.
The Tigers pushed the lead to 13-4 following a RBI double by Diego Melendez and RBI groundout by Boines in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, Alcorn State scored four runs in the top half of the ninth inning before the final out was recorded.
Robert Tate Jr. led the way at the plate going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while Melendez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Meanwhile, Boines finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI, while Tyshon Patty finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Kade Walker, the first of five pitchers on the night, earned his second start of the week going 4.0 innings and allowed a pair of runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Manuel Toro, Christian Delgado, and Kevin De Los Santos combined to pitch 4.0 inning of middle relief, allowing five runs on seven hits; before Talmadge Davis came on in the ninth and allowed on run on one hit with a strikeout.
