BATON ROUGE, La. | Jackson State track and field concluded the first day of the SWAC Outdoor Championships with four podium finishes, five final spots secured, and a brand new school record being set.
Robert Salhab III set a new school record in the men's hammer throw after a throw for 54.78 meters, earning himself a bronze medal in the event.
Freshman
Malayna Mallory also earned a trip to the podium finishing second in the women's hammer throw after setting two new personal bests with her best throw of 53.67 meters earning her a silver medal.
Collins Kibet and Duncan Koima finished the day with a silver and bronze medal in the men's 10k, with Kibet coming in at 32:35.90 while Koima followed with a time of 32:50.30.
Three distance runners qualified for the finals in the 1500-meter-race as Duncan Koima (4:04.17- 1st place),
Fabian Campbell (4:10.75 - 4th place), and
Godfrey Kimutai (4:07.07 - 6th place) all finished in the top nine and will compete in the finals on Tuesday night.
Joan Koech qualified for the women's 1500 with a 4:59.06 time which will also conclude on Tuesday night.
Senior
Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. rounded off the day one qualifiers with a 21.08 time in the men's 200-meter dash. Pitts competes in the finals on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Competition resumes tomorrow morning at 10:30 in the men's decathlon 110m hurdles.
