Men's Track and Field

Tigers claim four more medals on day two of SWAC Outdoor Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. | Kaiden Berry, Robert Salhab III, Collins Kibet, and Eric Lagat all represented the Jackson State University track and field teams on the podium on day two of the SWAC Outdoor Championships.

Berry, the graduate transfer from Prairie View A&M and reigning SWAC shot put champion, completed back-to-back first-place wins in the event after throwing for a distance of 17.13 meters to give himself his second straight gold medal. Salhab, who placed ninth in last year's event, took home the silver medal after a throw of 16.32 meters.

Despite several weather delays and a large schedule change to accommodate inclement conditions, Kibet claimed the first gold medal of his career with a win in the 3k steeplechase, after setting a new personal best time of 9:41.74 in the event. The freshman from Eldoret, Kenya, adds to his medal total after earning silver in Sunday's 10k. He was joined by Lagat, who clocked in at 9:55.87, securing the first medal of his Jackson State career with a bronze medal.

Junior Kaylin Jackson qualified for the finals of the women's 800-meter race, as she crossed the finish line at the 2:13.75 mark for a fifth-place finish. Finals are scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:25 p.m.

Conner Cooper and Lenasia Drummond also wrapped up their respective multi-events earlier in the day. Drummond finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,008 points accumulated over seven events, her best of which was the 100-meter hurdles, where she came in second place with a time of 14.63. Cooper also finished fifth in the decathlon, tallying 5,046 points. His best event was the 110-meter hurdles, where he finished second with a time of 15.72.

At the end of two days, the men's team leads the way with 74 points over the nearest Bethune-Cookman with 44 points. The women are slotted at fifth place, two points behind Bethune-Cookman.

With seven events down, the Tigers look to the final day of competition with the preliminary round of the women's 100-meter hurdles starting off at 9:30 Tuesday morning. The final day of competition will also be streaming live on SWAC TV.
