Tigers Ready to Make Run in SWAC Tournament, First Against Texas Southern

JACKSON, Miss. – The 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament bracket begins today on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Miss.

Jackson State, which drew the 3rd seed in the Tournament, will open up versus 6th seeded Texas Southern. The Lady Tigers have won both matchups this season with TSU, winning the first matchup 3-0 back on Sept.  27 and again on Oct. 26 in a 3-2 victory.

The two teams will meet again for the third time this season beginning at 4 p.m.

Despite battling some injuries near the end of the regular, Jackson State capped off the 2019 regular season with an impressive conference record of 13-5 and 17-18 overall.

They'll be led by a plethora of young talent all the way around, including three players that were just recipients of some prestigious SWAC awards.

Freshman Jylen Whitten, in her first season with the Tigers, was named the conference player of the year, a feat that has rarely happened for a true freshman. She was also named the Freshman of the Year. She finished with a team and conference high of 344 kills and averaged 3.25 kills per set

Alana Washington won the Libero/Defensive Specialist of the Year award after her impressive freshman campaign with the Blue and White. Washington finished with 500 digs and averaged 4.31 digs per set, which ranked first in the conference.

Madison Wolf, in her final SWAC Tournament with Jackson State, will look to help bring home a Tournament Championship beginning today.
Wolf finished the year with 137 kills and 35 blocks and was named to the Second ALL-SWAC Team.

Texas Southern enters today's matchup with JSU with a regular season record of 11-17 and 10-8 in conference play. They are led by Alexis Austin with 265 Kills, Danielle Lilley with 241 kills, Breyanna York with 671 sets and Valencia Grayson with 355 digs.

The SWAC Digital Network will broadcast the semifinals on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., while ESPNU features Sunday's Championship match slated for 3:00 p.m.
