PREVIEW: VB SWAC QUARTERFINAL MATCH VS. TEXAS SOUTHERN

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. --  Jackson State University volleyball, the back-to-back SWAC Regular Season champions, will take on Texas Southern volleyball tomorrow morning in the first quarterfinal match of the SWAC tournament. JSU heads into the tournament as the number one seed after clinching the regular season with a conference record of 15-1, whlie Texas Southern was seeded eighth with a SWAC record of 6-10.

The Tigers have a record of 7-6 against the Tigers in the last five years, and have won the last five consecutive matches in the series against TSU. The last time the two programs competed against each other was on October 9 in the SWAC Eastern Cluster One. 

In that match, JSU volleyball recorded a team hitting percentage of .320 and earned almost 40 kills on 97 total attacks. Alexis Williams led the Tigers with 18 kills, and recorded a hitting percentage of .600 in the opening match. Freshman Trinity Bryant recorded 18 digs in the match against Texas Southern as well, and helped the team secure the first win of the SWAC Eastern Cluster One by a sweep.

Williams heads into tomorrow's match leading Jackson State in kills and points scored, averaging 4.07 kills-per-set, and 4.71 points scored-per-set, respectively. Junior setter Damassy Thompson leads the Tigers in assists, averaging 9.01 assists-per-set. Defensively, Jordan Jones has been a constant force up front, leading with an average of 1.33 blocks-per-set, while Trinity Bryant averages 3.02 digs-per-set.

In contrast, Texas Southern's Thalia Cordero-Moreno leads their offense in kills and points scored, averaging 2.39 kills-per-set and 2.65 points scored-per-set,respectively, while Aeris Ramsey averages 4.45 assists-per-set as the TSU Tigers primary setter. Defensively, Chenise Cook averages 0.53 blocks-per-set, while Kyira Porch averages 2.95 digs-per-set.

First serve for Jackson State's quarterfinal match against Texas Southern is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Huntsville, as the 2021 Fall SWAC tournament is hosted by Alabama A&M University. To purchase tickets, click here.
