VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Jackson State University men's and women's tennis teams both defeated Alcorn State here on Friday, the Tigers beating the Braves 4-3 while the Lady Tigers registered a 4-0 victory over the Lady Braves.

The men's team win increased their record to 2-4 on the season, while the women's team upped their record to 5-2.

"It was a great effort on the men's side today," said JSU head coach Gabrielle Moore.  "We struggled through doubles, with a slow start, but really picked it up in singles.  We've been battling hard in so many areas mentally, emotionally and physically, so I'm proud for them and excited for them to close one out on the road."

In the men's competition, JSU's Francisco Vargas, Juan Soria, Richy Gamo and Hiromu Ikeda all registered wins in their singles matches, with Vargas defeating Alcorn State's David Pata 6-3, 6-3, Soria defeating Luka Andonov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, Gamo defeating Santiago Rocca 7-5, 6-2, and Ikeda defeating  Santitto 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles play, the JSU duo of Vargas/Gamo defeated Alcorn State's Rocca/Kareem Bowe 6-4.

"The women did an awesome job today," said Moore.  "Consistency is something we've been talking a lot about lately.  It's a confidence boost.  The ladies came out and were consistent from the first point in doubles to the last point in singles and it definitely showed how confident they were."

In the women's competition, Jackson State's Tyra-Nicole Whyte, Daniela Ramos and Zeina Shaban recorded wins in their singles matches, with Whyte defeating Alcorn State's Kimberly Kaome 6-1, 6-4, Ramos defeating Aizat Zholdakayeva 6-3, 6-1, and Shaabar defeating Tangia Riley-Codrington 6-0, 6-0.

In the women's doubles, the JSU duo teams of Whyte/Salem defeated ASU's Konstantinova/Kaome 6-3, 2-6, and Ramos/Arcarons defeated Riley-Codrington/Quiroz 6-2,

The Jackson State women will travel to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday for a 10 a.m. meeting with the SLU Lions.  The men will host the North Carolina Central Eagles on Tuesday, March 8 at 1 p.m.
