Women's Basketball Set to Face Texas Southern at Home

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team will return to the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center Saturday to host Texas Southern for its last weekend matchup at home this regular season. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.

Jackson State (16-8, 13-1 SWAC) returns to its home court after completing the season sweep of Alcorn State last weekend. The Tigers topped the Braves for the 81-49 win. Jackson State had two players score in double figures, led by Jariyah Covington, who had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Liz Martino tacked on 11 points and two steals from the bench and Keshuna Luckett added nine points and three steals. Covington was named SWAC Impact Player of the Week after her outstanding performance against Alcorn State. Daphane White pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.

The JSU bench tallied 29 points. The Tigers shot 49.1 percent (26-for-63) from the field and 71.9 percent (23-for-32) from the free throw line. Jackson State finished with 20 points in the paint, 29 bench points, 16 points off 16 Braves turnovers, nine second chance points and six fast break points.

Texas Southern (2-24, 2-13 SWAC) is coming off an 83-53 loss against UAPB at home Monday. Texas Southern gave up a slight three-point lead with 7:15 left in the third quarter which turned into a game changer for the maroon and white as it dropped its home finale. Micah Gray posted 17 points while Jaida Belton registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Jackson State increases its win streak to ten straight wins heading into its matchup with Texas Southern. The Tigers continue to hold the 1st ranked defense and offense in the conference. Keshuna Luckett is 3rd in the SWAC in assists and Jariyah Covington is 4th. Angel Jackson is the SWAC leader in blocked shots while Daphane White is ranked 12th. Ti'Ian Boler is 9th in scoring and Jariyah Covington is 14th. Angel Jackson is 4th in rebounding, while Daphane White is 7th and Daja Woodard is 11th. Boler still leads the league in free throw percentage followed by Jariyah Covington who is ranked 5th and Angel Jackson who is ranked 8th. Liz Martino is 13th in steals in the SWAC.

Jackson State Athletics will honor the 2022 SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament Champions Saturday by presenting them with their championship rings. The presentation will take place at halftime of the men's game.
