JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team will visit Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday evening after closing out the regular season with a 90-65 win over Prairie View A&M and claiming its fourth consecutive SWAC Regular Season Championship. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Jackson State (18-8, 14-1 SWAC) held Prairie View A&M to just 16.7 percent from deep in a 4-for-24 shooting performance on the way to its win over the Panthers at home Monday night. JSU had three players score in double figures, led by Jariyah Covington, who had 25 points. Keshuna Luckett added 13 points and two steals and Ti'lan Boler chipped in as well with 10 points and nine rebounds. Led by Boler's three offensive rebounds, Jackson State pulled down 18 boards that resulted in 22 second chance points. The JSU defense held Prairie View A&M to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 25 percent from the field.
Jackson State shot 28-for-66 (42.4 percent) from the field and 31-for-41 (75.6 percent) from the free throw line. The Tigers finished with 46 points in the paint, 31 bench points, 22 second chance points, 14 points off 12 PVAMU turnovers, and 14 fast break points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-15, 9-7 SWAC) is coming off a 95-60 win over Mississippi Valley State Saturday. The Golden Lions had five score in double figures led by Jelissa Reese 16 points. Maori Davenport added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Demetria Shephard finished with 13 points. UAPB jumped out to a 10-5 lead and led the Devillettes for the majority of the matchup. The Golden Lions held a 73-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter and continued to score for the win.
Jackson State defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 88-53 in the teams' first meeting in Jackson, Miss.
Jackson State increases its win streak to twelve straight wins heading into its matchup with UAPB. The Tigers continue to hold the 1st ranked defense and offense in the conference. Keshuna Luckett is 3rd in the SWAC in assists and Jariyah Covington is 4th. Angel Jackson is ranked 2nd in the SWAC in blocked shots while Daphane White is ranked 9th. Ti'Ian Boler is 9th in scoring and Jariyah Covington is 13th. Angel Jackson is 4th in rebounding, while Daphane White is 8th and Daja Woodard is 11th. Boler still leads the league in free throw percentage followed by Jariyah Covington who is ranked 2nd and Angel Jackson who is ranked 8th. Liz Martino is 13th in steals in the SWAC.
