MOBILE, Ala.| The Jackson State volleyball team is set to open its 2023 campaign competing in the South Alabama Tournament beginning Friday morning. The Tiger will take on Stephen F. Austin, Tulane and South Alabama in the two-day tournament.
Jackson State's head coach, Rose Washington is entering her 22nd season leading the pack. Washington guided the Tigers to a 13-17 overall record and an 11-5 record in conference play in 2022. The Tigers closed out the 2022 season with a semifinal's loss to Alabama State in the SWAC Tournament.
JSU is returning seven athletes to the court while bringing in eight new faces to the program. Key returners include Alexis Williams, Jordan Jones, Trinity Bryant and Karys Dove.
Alexis Williams was tabbed SWAC Preseason First-Team Outside/Right Side Hitter and Jordan Jones was named First-Team Middle Hitter/Blocker.
At the end of her junior season, Williams registered 351 kills for Jackson State. Williams finished with a 0.218 hitting percentage. She also recorded 38 aces and 20 total blocks. Williams also notched 222 digs. In 2022, she led the team in aces and kills. She was ranked fourth in the SWAC in points and kills.
Jordan Jones registered 155 kills and 52 blocks last season. She led the Tigers in blocks and was ranked fifth in the conference in hitting percentage (.266).
The Tigers were selected to finish third in the SWAC Preseason Poll.
Jackson State will take on Stephen F. Austin and Tulane on the first day of the tournament. First serves are set for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
