Jackson State opens SWAC Tournament against Texas Southern

ATLANTA, Ga. | East Division No. 4 seed Jackson State opens play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament against West Division No. 1 seed Texas Southern in the third game of the day at Russ Chandler Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

A 3 p.m. (ET) first pitch is scheduled for the game, featuring two teams who played against each other in the season-opener at Minute Maid Park as part of the Astros Cactus Jack HBCU Classic that Texas Southern won, 9-5. In that game, Texas Southern scored at least one run from the second to the seventh inning to pull away despite a four-run fifth inning by Jackson State that gave them the lead.

Jackson State (33-18) enters the week led by three second-team all-conference selections including outfielder Jordan McCladdie and designated hitter (now second baseman) Myles White. Joseph Eichelberger and Robert Tate Jr. lead the team in hitting each at .360 with Eichelberger collecting 60 hits and Tate 40. Meanwhile, McCladdie (.351) and Rodney Hibler Jr. (.347) are among the nation's best in stolen bases and triples, combined for 68 total steals, and are the only teammates in the top 10.

Meanwhile, White (.347) and Lenny Montesano (.332) are each over .300 for the season with Montesano leading the team in home runs (10) and RBI (50).

On the mound, Christian Womble - the third all-conference selection for the Tigers - leads the team in earned run average (3.90) and saves (seven), and will provide the Tigers with depth out of the bullpen. Starters Garrett VanDeventer (6-5, 5.98 ERA) and Isaiah Williams (5-3, 5.23 ERA) are among the nation's leaders in complete games (two) and strikeouts (89) respectively.
