ATLANTA, Ga. | Jackson State dropped a 4-3 contest in the 2024 Pepsi Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament sponsored by Chevrolet in extra innings at Russ Chandler Stadium on Friday.
Jackson State (35-19) was held to seven hits by seven different players.
Isaiah Williams, the third of four pitchers, suffered the loss working 1.0 inning allowing a pair of runs on three hits.
Both teams had chances with runners at third before a defensive play from both teams ended the threats. Bethune-Cookman attempted a squeeze in the bottom of the fourth before
Garrett VanDeventer fielded a bunt and threw home to Sebastian
Cabeza for the out, before the Wildcats returned the favor when Cabeza missed a bunt attempt forcing
Joseph Eichelberger out at the plate in the top of the seventh.
Bethune-Cookman had another chance in the bottom of the eighth before a ground ball to first led to the tying run being thrown out at the plate before
Christian Womble struck out Jorge Gonzalez Febo to end the inning.
Things got interesting as the teams combined for three runs in the ninth with the inning ending with runners at second and third for Bethune-Cookman.
How It Happened
- (T1) Jordan McCladdie scored after stealing third and reaching on a fielding error off the bat of Lenny Montesano, Jackson State 1-0.
- (B7) Colton Olasin delivered a one-out chopper over the third baseman to score pinch runner AJ Smith from second, 1-1.
- (T8) Lenny Montesano delivered a two-out single through the right side to plate McCladdie with the go-ahead run, Jackson State 2-1.
- (T9) Shemar Harris singled to left center to score Arjun Huerta, Jackson State 3-1.
- (B9) Jorge Rodriguez was hit by a pitch before a wild pitch scored the tying run to force extra innings, 3-3.
- (B10) Ivan Escobar led off the inning with a double and later scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk, Bethune-Cookman 4-3.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 12 p.m. (ET) with the winner earning a spot in the championship game.
