Defensive Effort Leads Jackson State Past Bethune-Cookman

JACKSON, Miss. | The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Bethune-Cookman to just 12.5 percent from deep in a 2-for-16 shooting performance on the way to a 64-47 win against the Wildcats at home Saturday.

The Tigers (8-10, 6-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 19 points. Zoe Cooper tacked on 13 points, three steals and two blocks and Diaka Berete helped out with 10 points from the bench.

Jackson State collected 39 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Bethune-Cookman's 35, led by seven boards from Leianya Massenat.

Jackson State's defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 12.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 32.8 percent from the field.

How It Happened

  • After playing to a 9-9 tie early in the game, Jackson State went on an 11-0 run with 4:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Berete, to take a 20-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. 
  • JSU did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 20 points close to the basket.
  • The Tigers kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 5:25 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Dilworth, to increase its lead to 27-18.
  • JSU proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 32-22 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 12 points.
  • The Tigers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Cooper, to expand its lead further to 42-27 with 6:39 to go in the third.
  • Before the conclusion of the third period, the Wildcats had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 47-35 edge.
  • Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Dilworth's jumper, to grow the lead to 64-43 with 1:50 to go in the contest.
  • The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 64-47 win.
  • Jackson State took advantage of three Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
