JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and then used the arm of Erick Gonzalez to pick up a 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alabama A&M at Braddy Field on Thursday night.
Jackson State (18-17, 6-10 SWAC) jumped on the board after a sacrifice bunt from Ledy Alvarez wreaked havoc on the Alabama A&M defense that allowed Wilbert Perez to score from first after the ball was thrown into right field. They added another run in the inning when Arjun Huerta knocked in Alvarez with a sacrifice fly to center.Â
The Tigers turned it over to Gonzalez (4-3) who came within one out of a complete game. The senior righthander logged 8.2 innings scattering six hits, while striking out 10 with no walks. Stevins Spurgeon Jr. came out of the bullpen to record his first save of the season facing one batter and recording a strikeout with a runner on base.
