JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State baseball opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play and host rival Alcorn State for a three-game series in the Capital City.
Friday's match-up is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bob Braddy Field, Saturday will move to Smith-Wills Field for a 6 p.m. start and the series finale on Sunday is back on campus and scheduled for 1 p.m.
Note: If you bring a ticket stub to Saturday's basketball games versus Mississippi Valley State to Smith-Wills it can be redeemed for admission. Season tickets will also be honored.
JSU enters with a 3-4 record and are coming off a sweep over LeMoyne-Owen by scores of 21-4 and 8-2.
Top Ranked Offense
Entering conference play the Tigers sport the top-ranked offense in the SWAC. As a team, JSU is hitting .364, which leads the conference (Alabama State is second at .282.). The Blue and White have totaled 87 hits, 49 runs, 43 RBI, 10 doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs. Also, the Tigers are slugging .456.
Newsome, Williams, Dillard and Sweet
CJ Newsome and
Jaylyn Williams each rank second in the conference with a .500 batting average.
Chandler Dillard is fifth with a .429 average and
Torreahno Sweet is seventh with a .400 average.
Newsome, who is the Tigers' leadoff hitter, is slugging .682 and sports a .560 on on-base percentage and has scored eight runs and ranks in the top five in each statistical category.
Dillard's two triples also leads the SWAC.
A Look at The Braves
Alcorn State enters with a 2-3 overall record and have lost two in a row.
Tristin Garcia leads the Braved with a .438 batting average and has tallied seven hits, five RBI and a home run. Travaris Cole is hitting .391 with 11 RBI and Brandon Rembert is batting .368 with three RBI.
