Game Preview: Lady Tigers at Alabama State

JACKSON, Miss. - Coming off of a fresh 64-56 SWAC opening victory against Alabama A&M Saturday night, the Jackson State Lady Tigers make the trip to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Alabama State tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m.

GAME 5 RECAP: JACKSON STATE 64 | ALABAMA A&M 56
It had been 298 days since the last time the Lady Tigers had squared off on the hardwood with a SWAC opponent. On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers picked back up where they left off last season, defeating Alabama A&M by a final score of 64-56 to open conference play in 2021.

Jackson State controlled the outcome of the game from the opening tip, beginning the contest on an 8-0 run before extending their lead to 12-2 within the first four minutes of action. All five Lady Tiger starters scored at least two points during the first four minutes of play.

Jackson State led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter of action. Alabama A&M did not shy away, as the Lady Bulldogs managed a 16-3 run to pull even at 24-24 midway through the second quarter. 

The remaining five minutes of the quarter saw a shift in momentum back in favor of the Lady Tigers as JSU closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 34-26 lead into the locker room.

Jackson State continued to build it's lead in the second half, taking a 44-28 lead early into the start of the third quarter. Leading 56-45 with 4:15 remaining in the game, The Lady Bulldogs would go on an 11-5 run to pull within five points with 52-seconds left. The Lady Tigers went on to finish off the win, defeating Alabama A&M 64-56 to open SWAC play.

Three Lady Tigers scored in double-digits with Dayzsha Rogan and Ameshya Williams leading the way with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Rogan had nine rebounds and three steals. 
 
In two matchups last season versus the Lady Bulldogs, Williams tallied a total of 46 points, 28 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Williams once again collected a double-double versus Alabama A&M, finishing the contest with 14 points and 18 rebounds. It was the most rebounds recorded by Williams against Alabama A&M in three games played.

Jariyah Covington, in her first SWAC competition as a Lady Tiger, managed 13 points on the afternoon. 

As a team, JSU shot 21-of-52 for 40.4 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers outrebounded AAMU 46-to-34 and finished with 24 points in the paint. 

LAST TIME VESUS ALABAMA STATE
The last time the Lady Tigers and the Lady Hornets met was in the first round of the 2019-20 SWAC Tournament last season on March 10, 2020. The Lady Tigers defeated Alabama State by a final score of 71-53 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. In the contest, Ameshya Williams scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds – both game highs – to lead Jackson State past Alabama State 71-53 in the opening round of the 2020 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
 
JSU started the game off slowly and led 15-14 after one-quarter of action. The Blue and White grabbed momentum in the second quarter and outscored The Lady Hornets 18-8. JSU also ramped up its defense and held ASU to 3-for-18 shooting from the field. The Lady Tigers also won the rebounding margin 13-3.
 
Marneisha Hamer added nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from the field. The Memphis product also grabbed six rebounds.
 
Freshman and Lanier High School alum Keshuna Luckett scored eight points and handed out three assists.
 
Elexis PeytonDayzsha Rogan, and Sumer Williams each scored six points.
 
As a team, JSU shot 36.9 percent (24-for-65) from the field, while holding ASU to 28.3 percent (15-for-53).
 
JSU won the battle in the paint and out-rebounded ASU 51-26 and 25-9 on the offensive boards.

JACKSON STATE LEADERS
Jackson State has three players averaging double-digit points through six games with preseason first-team All-SWAC nominee, Dayzsha Rogan pacing the way for the Lady Tigers with 19.7 points per game.

Jackson State newcomer, Jariyah Covington is having a fantastic season in her first year, averaging 12.2 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game.

SWAC Preseason Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Ameshya Williams, ranks second on the team with 15.7 points per game.

She leads Jackson State with 10.7 rebounds per game. Williams ranked 11th nationally in blocked shots with 16 blocked shots on the season while ranking 7th nationally with 3.0 blocked shots per game.

It will be exactly 300 days since their last competition when the Alabama State women's basketball team takes the floor at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome at 5 p.m. Monday, as the Lady Hornets welcome Jackson State to open the 2021 season.
 
Alabama State will begin the 2021 season the same way it ended the 2020 season, facing off against the reigning conference champion Jackson State (2-4, 1-0). The two squads met in the SWAC Quarterfinals on March 10, 2020, with the Lady Tigers taking the contest, 71-53.
 
The game marks the beginning of Freda Freeman-Jackson's 23rd season at the helm of the program. She is the all-time winningest coach in program history, amassing 317 victories, and has led Alabama State to three SWAC regular season championships, three SWAC tournament titles and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Lady Hornets will be led by the junior guard duo of Jayla Crawford and Ayana Emmanuel, who were named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team. They both played in all 30 games in the 2019-2020 season and averaged exactly 11.0 points.
