JACKSON Miss.| After kicking off conference play 1-0 at Alcorn State, the Jackson State University women's basketball team seeks to keep the wins rolling as it hosts Alabama State Saturday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
Jackson State (4-7, 1-0 SWAC) defeated Alcorn State 59-49 Monday evening on the road in Lorman, Miss. The Tigers led most of the game and took a 14-point lead into the half. Alcorn State slowly crept back into the game cutting its deficit to seven points with 2:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. JSU held on to the lead and walked away with the win.
Jariyah Covington finished with 17 points, three assists and three rebounds. Ti'Ian Boler and Angel Jackson each tallied nine points while Boler added seven rebounds and Jackson tacked on eight.
Alabama State (5-8, 2-0 SWAC) opened SWAC play on the road topping Mississippi Valley State (76-65) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (72-63). Ayana Emmanuel registered 21 points and two assists in the win over MVSU, while Shmya Ward finished with 18 points, two rebounds and two assists. Cordasia Harris also added 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Jayla Crawford and Shmya Ward each posted 23 points against UAPB, plus a combined 13 boards. Harris also finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
Jackson State met Alabama State last in the 2022 SWAC Title game. JSU defeated the Hornets 101-80. The Tigers also took the regular season win, 79-58, on the road.
The Tigers will return to the AAC to host Alabama A&M Monday at 5:30 p.m.
