Baseball To Play In Andre Dawson Classic

The Jackson State University baseball team returns to action this weekend in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans.
 
JSU (2-2) will face the University of New Orleans Friday at 6 p.m., Prairie View Saturday at 3 p.m., and Grambling Sunday at Noon in an event sponsored by Major League Baseball. It is Jackson State's second straight year competing in the event, named for one of only HBCU alumni enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
 
INF Ty Hill has started 2023 as he ended 2022 - getting hits, and getting on base. After missing the opening game due to an ankle injury suffered on Thursday during batting practice, Hill has had at least one hit in all three games he has played this season. Hill is hitting .455 (5-for-11), including a double, two runs scored, and six RBI (1.045 OPS; .500 OB%, .545 SLG%). Dating back to last season, Hill is on a 13-game hitting streak and a 13-game on-base streak.
 
2B Daniel Bannon earned SWAC Co-Player Of The Week honors and has at least one hit in all four games this season. In his first year in the program, Bannon leads the team with a .471 average (8-17) with one double, one triple, four runs scored, and seven RBI (1.147 OPS; .500 OB%; .647 SLG%). Bannon has three multi-hit games this season and is tied for seventh in the SWAC in hits, tied for fifth in triples (one), tied for third in RBI.
 
New Orleans (1-3) posted a season-opening win over Kennesaw State last weekend. Prairie View (1-3) posted a season-opening win over Grambling last Friday, and lost to JSU 8-3 this past Sunday in the Houston Astros Cactus Jack HBCU Classic. Grambling (1-3) won its first game of the season this past Sunday over Miss. Valley St. and lost a close game to #9 Arkansas Tuesday.
