MEMPHIS, Tenn.| The Jackson State women's basketball will open play in the First Round of the 2023 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) Thursday evening at Memphis. This marks Jackson State's third appearance in the postseason WNIT.
 
Jackson State (21-9, 17-1 SWAC) earned an automatic qualifier bid to the WNIT after winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season championship. The Tigers concluded their run at the 2023 SWAC Basketball Tournament falling to Southern University at the buzzer, 65-64, in the semifinals round.
 
Jackson State registered 20 wins on the season and 15 straight wins which included a trip to the SWAC Championship Semifinals. The Tigers were ranked in the top 100 for most of its 2022-23 campaign rounding out the regular season ranked 92^nd.  The Tigers led the SWAC in most major categories including scoring, blocks per game, field goal percentage and winning percentage. Angel Jackson sits nationally ranked at 10^th in blocks per game and 12^th in blocks.
 
Memphis (20-10, 11-4 AAC) secured the American Athletic Conference's (AAC) automatic bid into the WNIT after falling in the semifinals round of the AAC Championship Tournament. They would fall to UCF, 48-46. Memphis also completed a historic 20-win season.  
 
Tip-off between Jackson State and Memphis is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game can be streamed on ESPN 3 and WOAD 1300 A.M. | 103.5 FM.  Tickets for the WNIT can be purchased here or by calling the University of Memphis Ticket Office at (901) 678-2331.
