Caver Earns SWAC Honor; Baseball To Face Alcorn In Weekend Series

Jackson State baseball pitcher Jesse Caver was named Southwestern Athletic Conference Co-Pitcher of The Week for his performance last week.
 
Caver (6-0, 185; Sr., Solon, Ohio) pitched nine innings of shutout baseball in games against Southeastern La. and New Orleans.
 
Caver threw one shutout inning in relief last Tuesday vs. SLU. Caver then started on the mound Friday night and held New Orleans in check over eight innings, yielding only four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a 3-0 win over the Privateers.
 
This season, Caver is 2-1 in four appearances with a 1.80 ERA and is tied for eighth in the SWAC in strikeouts with 13. Caver has not allowed a run in his last 11 innings pitched.
 
Tigers To Face Alcorn In Non-Conference Series: JSU Baseball (8-2) has won six consecutive games heading into its weekend series at Alcorn.
 
The two rivals will play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m., with a live radio broadcast of all three games at gojsutigers.com/live.
 
After winning all three games in the Andre Dawson Classic last weekend, Jackson State beat Arkansas Pine Bluff Tuesday night before sweeping a Wednesday doubleheader vs. Tougaloo.
 
INF Ty Hill is on a 19-game on-base streak dating to last season and has at least one hit in eight of nine games this season with five multi-hit games (two 2-hit games, three 3-hit games), and four multi-RBI games (one 2-RBI, one three-RBI, two 4-RBI). Hill is third in the SWAC in hitting (.485), tied for third in home runs (career-high tying three), second in hits (16) and RBI, tied for first in doubles (six), and leads the SWAC in OPS (1.525; .585 OB%; .939 SLG%).
 
INF Daniel Bannon is on a 10-game hitting streak, with four multi-hit games (two 2-hit, two 3-hit) and two multi-RBI games (one 2-RBI, one 4-RBI). He is batting .400 with 12 runs scored (t-3rd/SWAC) and eight RBI. 1B Bret Mersman was a double away from the cycle in Wednesday's game two win over Tougaloo, as his 4-for-5 performance with three runs scored and three RBI raised his batting average by more than 100 points.  
 
Since starting the last four games, OF Jordon Smiley has at least one hit in each contest, with two home runs and 12 RBI.
 
The Braves (1-7) are coming off a Tuesday road loss at Lamar. INFs Jamaal Green (.563) and Garrett Palladino (.345) lead the team in batting average.
