Men's and Women's Tennis Set to Open Play at 2023 SWAC Tennis Tournament

NEW ORLEANS, La.| The Jackson State men's and women's tennis teams will open play at the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tennis Tournament Saturday at City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans, La. The women will face the three seed, Alabama State at 9 a.m. The men will take on the third seeded Alabama A&M Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m.

The defending SWAC Champion Jackson State women's tennis (13-11, 8-1 SWAC) team is coming off a 4-0 win against Alcorn State Tuesday in their regular season finale at home.

Paula Arcarons and Daniella Ramos opened the women's matches with a 6-2 doubles victory. Tyra-Nicole Whyte and Robin Alston fell in their doubles matchup, but the Tigers were still able to secure the doubles point as Zeina Shabaan and De'Alva Alston's opponents forfeited the match.

Arcarons finished singles play with a two-set win, 6-1, 6-2, over Kimberely Kaome. Daniella Ramos also defeated her opponent Jaimie Edwards in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, to seal the 4-0 win for JSU.

Daniela Ramos was named All-SWAC Second Team in singles position 4 for her outstanding season.

The Alabama State women's tennis (8-10, 7-2 SWAC) team entered the tournament as the third seed and defeated Alcorn State 4-0 in the quarterfinals round.

The Jackson State men's tennis (8-10, 4-1 SWAC) team closed out the regular season with a thrilling 4-1 win over Alcorn State at home Tuesday morning.
The Tigers opened play falling in their doubles matchups as Francisco Vargas and Richy Gamo lost 7-5 and Carlos Castillo and Raul Centeno lost 4-6. Gokalp Ayar opened singles defeating Arne Sohmer, 6-1, 6-1.  Vargas topped Dakota Fernandez 6-0, 6-1 in his singles matchup to push the Tigers forward. Richy Gamo went head-to-head with his opponent to secure JSU's win as Gamo overcame Isaac Santitto 6-3, 7-5.

Raul Centeno was tabbed singles position two second team, while Richy Gamo was named to singles position four second team and Carlos Castillo landed singles position six second team.

The Alabama A&M men's tennis (3-12, 3-2 SWAC) team advanced in the tournament after defeating Prairie View A&M in the semifinals round of the tournament.
