JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State claimed a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series with a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at Braddy Field.
The Tigers claimed a 14-4 victory in eight innings before coming from behind for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, seven different Tigers recorded multiple hits in the 20-hit attack led by
Lenny Montesano who finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Jordan McCladdie,
Sebastian Cabeza, and
Joseph Eichelberger each collected three hits.
Garrett VanDeventer (3-1) picked up the win working 7.0 innings in the start and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out six.
In the nightcap, Jackson State (18-5, 4-0 SWAC) used a 13-hit attack to come from behind to defeat the Delta Devils. Five different players picked up multiple hits led by
Robert Tate Jr. with three.
CJ Lewis (3-0) picked up the win in relief working 2.2 innings and striking out four, while
Christian Womble picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth – striking out the side.
How It Happened (Game 1)
- (B2) Cabera tripled to right to drive in the game's first two runs before scoring on a Hasan Standifer single down the left field line, Jackson State 3-0.
- (T3) Jack Early scored on a wild pitch followed by an RBI single off the bat of Ty Washington, Jackson State 3-2.
- (B3) Cabeza added another RBI with a single to right to score Montesano, Jackson State 4-2.
- (B4) Rodney Hibler Jr.. singled to left to drive in McCladdie before Hibler scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers added one more run on a Tate single, Jackson State 7-2.
- (T5) The Delta Devils got back on the board using an RBI groundout, Jackson State 7-3.
- (B5) Eichelberger drove in a run with a sacrifice fly followed by a Montesano single right, Jackson State 9-3.
- (T6) The Delta Devils added another run on a sacrifice fly with one out in the inning, Jackson State 9-4.
- (B7) Davione Hull doubled to right to drive in a run, Jackson State 10-4.
- (B8) The Tigers scored on a wild pitch followed by a two-run double by McCladdie and an RBI single from Eichelberger, Jackson State 14-4.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- (T3) Jodany Ofarril-Ortiz scored on a wild pitch before a two-run single by Will Menedez to give the Delta Devils the early lead, Mississippi Valley State 4-0.
- (B3) McCladdie connected on a solo home run to right, Mississippi Valley State 4-1.
- (T6) Early was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the lead to four, Mississippi Valley State 5-1.
- (B6) Hull started the scoring with a double to right. Tate doubled to right center to drive in Hull before Cabera singled to left to drive in Tate, Mississippi Valley State 5-4.
- (B7) Eichelberger singled to right and Montesano doubled to left to give Jackson State the lead, Jackson State 6-5.
- (B8) McCladdie tripled to center to drive in Cabeza before scoring on a Hibler double, Jackson State 8-5.
