JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State used a nine-run first inning to pull away for an 18-1 victory over Tougaloo at Braddy Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Jackson State (24-11) scored nine in the first, three in the second, and another six in the fifth to pull away for the win. They pounded out 12 hits in the win with four players picking up multiple hits, while also getting 20 players on the field against Tougaloo (12-30).
Lenny Montesano went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored with a home run, while
Rodney Hibler Jr. finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored and a home run.
Tyshon Patty finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored, and
Jaelen Williams finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Brandon Haston (3-1), the first of five pitchers for Jackson State, picked up the win in a pre-determined start working 3.0 innings and allowing one run (unearned) on two walks with three strikeouts.
How It Happened
- (B1) Hibler led off with a solo home run to left followed by a one-out solo home run by Montesano. The inning continued with an RBI single from Ledy Alvarez followed by a two-run single by Patty, and an RBI triple by Williams. The Tigers continued the scoring on a wild pitch that allowed Williams to score before Montesano reached on an infield single bringing in another run, Jackson State 9-0.
- (T2) The Bulldogs took advantage of an infield error to get on the board, Jackson State 9-1.
- (B2) Williams brought in another run with a sacrifice fly followed by another sacrifice fly off the bat of Hederick Torres, and an RBI double by Hibler, Jackson State 12-1.
- (B5) Williams recorded another RBI with an infield single and an RBI single by Torres. They finished the scoring with a three-run home run by Chance Pollard, Jackson State 18-1.
Game Notes
- Montesano extended his hitting streak to 11 with a solo home run in the first and his consecutive game streak of reaching base to 20.
- Hibler picked up multiple hits for a team-high 19th time with two hits on the day, while Montesano did for the 13th time.
- Jordan McCladdie had his eight-game hitting streak snapped while Joseph Eichelberger had his five-game hitting streak come to a close.
- Five Tiger pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts including Je-andrick Lourens and Isaiah Williams who struck out the side in the fifth and sixth innings.
