JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State used a four-run first inning to pull away from New Orleans for a 10-3 non-conference victory at Braddy Field on Tuesday night.
Jackson State (26-14) used three innings of multiple runs including the first to pull away for the win. The Tigers also scored two in the third and another two in the fourth, while holding New Orleans off the board until the fifth inning.
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits in the win led by
Lenny Montesano who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a double, while
Joseph Eichelberger finished 2-for-3 and
Robert Tate Jr. finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and RBI.
Stevins Spurgeon Jr. (4-0), the second of five pitchers, picked up the win in relief working 3.0 innings and allowing one run (unearned) on three walks with four strikeouts.
Christian Womble got the start and worked 2.0 innings allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Miles Thomas and
Isaiah Williams worked scoreless innings in relief with Williams recording five strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
How It Happened
- (B1) Jordan McCladdie grounded out to second to drive in Rodney Hibler Jr. before Tate singled on a bunt back to the pitcher to score Montesano and expand the lead. The inning stayed alive when Sebastian Cabeza recorded another bunt in the inning with a sacrifice to score Eichelberger followed by a Myles White RBI single to center, Jackson State 4-0.
- (B2) Eichelberger singled to left to score McCladdie, Jackson State 5-0.
- (B3) Tyshon Patty reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt to score a run followed by a Hibler sacrifice fly, Jackson State 7-0.
- (B4) White advanced to third and Tate scored on a wild pitch followed by another wild pitch to score White, Jackson State 9-0.
- (T5) Diego Villescas reached on a fielding error allowing a run to score, Jackson State 9-1.
- (B5) Tate tripled down the right field line to drive in Montesano, Jackson State 10-1.
- (T7) Miguel Useche drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Andrew Guidry drove in a run with another sacrifice fly, Jackson State 10-3.
