HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Jackson State pulled away from Alabama A&M, only to use a ninth-inning double to play to capture an 8-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over the Bulldogs at Bulldog Field on Thursday afternoon.
Jackson State (32-18, 15-12) and Alabama A&M were tied at 4-all before the Tigers put three up in the top of the eighth and another in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead. Alabama A&M had a chance to in the bottom of the ninth with no outs and runners at second and third before a fly ball to left ended up in a double play courtesy of
Arjun Huerta on the tag attempt at the plate.
Lenny Montesano and Huerta led the 15-hit attack by the Tigers with each collecting three hits, with Huerta adding a pair of RBI.
Rodney Hibler Jr. finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, while
Myles White finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, and
Shemar Harris finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Christian Womble (4-2), the second of three pitchers, picked up the win working 3.0 innings allowing two runs of three hits with five strikeouts.
Isaiah Williams picked up his first save of the season working the final inning allowing one run on three hits.
How It Happened
- (T3) Jordan McCladdie hit a two-run home run to right to score Harris, Jackson State 2-0.
- (T4) Huerta connected on an RBI single, Jackson State 3-0.
- (B4) Mekhi Lloyd singled through the right side to drive in a run followed by an RBI single by Chevalier Dorris before Lloyd scored on a pick to first, Jackson State 3-2.
- (T6) Sebastian Cabeza recorded an RBI single to right center, Jackson State 4-2.
- (B6) Dre Amaral singled to right to drive in a run, Jackson State 4-3.
- (T8) Huerta connected on a solo home run to right followed by a sacrifice fly by McCladdie and a wild pitch that scored Hibler, Jackson State 7-4.
- (B8) Brycen Hammonds recorded an RBI single followed by an RBI groundout, Jackson State 7-6.
- (T9) Harris reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run, Jackson State 8-6.
- (B9) Jesus Riera singled to left to drive in a run, Jackson State 8-7.
