Soccer Falls To Grambling In Overtime

Box Score GRAMBLING, La - The Jackson State women's soccer defense held strong for nearly 100 minutes, but a last-second goal from Grambling State's Lizbeth Aguero led to a 1-0 loss Friday afternoon att the GSU Soccer Field.

The JSU offense was slow to start the first half as only four were able to record shots. Sophomore Maya-Joy Thompson tallied the first shot of the match in the seventh minute. Tanagna Payne, Sydni Wilson, and Ayanna Pinder followed with one shot-on goal a piece, all three shot attempts fell into the hands of Grambling's goal keeper Quinlan Warren.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tionna Taylor was solid in the opening 45 minutes and raked in three saves to hold the match at 0-0.

Returning from halftime, JSU registered four shots in the second half.  One of the major scoring opportunities came in the 90th minute when Ayanna Pinder shot-on goal and hit the crossbar.

"The players were magnificent and gave everything. To lose on a goal like that is incredibly disappointing, however, we continue to play very well", head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "At some point the results will turn in our favor. Instead of finding new ways to lose, we need to find new ways to win. Playing this well for this long to not have a win is hard to endure, but our players have immense inner strength and my belief in them will never waver. We had several good chances to win in it regulation and we have only ourselves to blame for not taking our chances. As we continue in life moving forward, we continue to play and train in a forward fashion and look for chances to win"

Taylor kept JSU at bay and picked up another save in the second half to force sudden-death, overtime play.

In extra minutes, GSU's Kailey Pena set up Lizbeth Ageuro and she found the net off the bottom of the crossbar to secure the 1-0 victory.

Jackson State will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 3 for a 1 p.m. contest at UAPB.
